The band formed in 1983, comprising Mad Shadows members lead singer/rhythm guitarist Trevor Steel and guitarist John Holliday, along with former Expressos members bassist Johnnie Christo (a.k.a. John Christoforou) and drummer Milan Zekavica.
The seeds for the formation of The Escape Club were sown when Zekavica joined Steel and Holliday in Mad Shadows, who subsequently performed on an album by the obscure early 1980s Stephen Milford-fronted new wave outfit Planning by Numbers.
Before long, Christo had also joined the lineup, and The Escape Club was born and the fledgling band quickly released the single “Breathing”.
In 1985 The Escape Club signed with EMI and recorded the album White Fields, which was released the following year.
In 1987, the group moved to Atlantic Records and began recording their next album, Wild Wild West, and the album was released in the summer of 1988 and spawned the single “Wild, Wild West”, which climbed to No.
In 1989, they released two more singles from Wild Wild West: “Shake for the Sheik”, which climbed to No. 28, and “Walking Through Walls”, which peaked at No. 81.
The Escape Club’s cover single of The Doors’ “20th Century Fox” appeared on The Wonder Years: Music From the Emmy Award-Winning Show & Its Era, which also received airplay on MTV. The song was produced by Doors band member Ray Manzarek.
In 1990 the band returned to the studio to record their final album, Dollars and Sex, which saw a March 1991 release. The first single, “Call It Poison”, failed to crack the US Top 40.
Atlantic Records then released the song “I’ll Be There”, which the group said was heavily influenced by the death of a friend’s wife, and the song has become an anthem among those who have experienced losses of their own.
“I’ll Be There” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved gold status in the US.The group disbanded in 1992.
The Escape Club is the only British band to have a No. 1 hit in the U.S. while not charting at all in their native UK.
The band self-released a fourth album “Cloud 10” in 2005.
Trevor Steel and John Holliday reunited, with new band member Red Broad, in 2009 and self-released a fifth studio album, Celebrity, in February 2012.
In 2019, Johnnie Christo returned to the line-up and the Escape Club played as a full band for the first time in 25 years during the U.S. tour Lost 80s Live.

Escape Club is also the biggest club in Rembrandt square, founded in far 1986, therefore it has a long and appreciated nightlife history. It is an evergreen of Amsterdam’s clubbing! After visiting amazing streets and lagoons, bars and pubs of Amsterdam, go to complete your evening in this club.
The club offers a musical menu covering all popular styles: house, electro, techno and pop, including world-famous DJs such as Tiësto, David Guetta, Paul van Dyk, Kevin Saunderson, Todd Terry.
Escape Club has multiple floors and halls, including the restaurant where you can feast on a delicious 4-course-meal. Every room has its own music from electro to party music, from R&B to Afro music.
Escape Club, therefore, also features the DeLuxe bar, the Caffè, the Studio and the Lounge, a smaller venue, so before you go to dance through the night, you can take some drink or dinner at Escape Caffè outside the club, enjoying and watching beautiful Rembrandt square and numerous persons walking around. Escape deLuxe, an intimate club, and Escape Studio, are two smaller clubs inside Escape Club, where you can enjoy TV programmes and smaller dance events. Both of them are located on the 2nd floor of Escape Caffé, on the same level as Café De Kroon, and have a beautiful view over all Rembrandt Square. Escape deLuxe and Escape Studio can also be used for private parties, wedding parties, birthday parties, seminars, meetings, dinner buffets, different business presentations or smaller musical events. They have their own sound and lighting facilities (including a DJ booth with DJM800 mixer and 2 x CDJ2000 CD player). These 2 clubs are accessible directly from Escape Club, but they also have their own entrance at the Amstel or via Caffé de Kroon.
Escape Lounge is accessible from the shared entrance, on the first floor, which is open in the weekends, offering R&B and Eclectic nights, with Juice and Afro Mansion parties.
Thursday and Sunday night you can enter Club Escape for free with your Amsterdam Nightlife ticket. The entrance for students is always free. If you prefer some of VIP options, you can make reservation for your own table, including a bottle service from professional host and hostesses. The best bartenders in Amsterdam will make amazing colorful cocktails for you! The dress code at Club Escape is taken more seriously than other clubs around Amsterdam. This means you should be dressed your best, because sneakers, joggers, caps, and sportswear are not allowed.
The most popular parties, named BIG-NIGHT-OUT’S, are held on Thursday nights, while THIRSTY THURSDAYS party dates are published in advance, therefore you can make reservation for a Dine & Dance arrangement, 3 course dinner including VIP entrance for 40 euro.
Friday parties named HOUSE RULES will give you the opportunity to dance listening the best DJs, such as Troj, Mc Hats, Raymundo, Mc Miss Bunty, Ryan Benoir, etc, while Saturday parties named BRAINWASH, will “wash” and liberate your mind for several hours. Wednesday HOTSPOT nights will bring the best urban, house, eclectic and EDM rhythm. Choose your preferred day and party you want to enjoy in this club, escaping for a while from your everyday reality!
Escape Club is easily accessible by taking Tram 4 to the Rembrandtplein Metro/Tram stop. It is also easily reached by walking within minutes around Amsterdam.
